The federal government has issued a consumer alert about counterfeit cosmetics.

The Federal Bureau of Investigations‘ partner agency, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), says it has seen an increase in counterfeit cosmetics and fragrances being sold online, at flea markets and at some mall kiosks.

IPR warns consumers about the health risks associated with using these substandard products, and explains they can contain harmful ingredients including dangerous chemicals, such as carcinogens, as well as bacteria that can cause skin rashes and infections.

The agency advises consumers to notice whether or not the scent of a product or its color is off – if it is, it can be a fake.

Or – combat piracy by using these features on your packaging, as shown by Robert Youill, managing director, FTI Consulting.
